Superheroes don’t make excuses. They have big goals and they never give up on them. They get stuck in and get the job done. They have strong, admirable characters, help others, work well in teams and they don’t seek credit – but they get it anyway.
Oh...and superheroes always get the girl/guy. (Which might not be much use in a wod, but let’s be honest, it’s a perk that doesn't suck.)
Time to pull on your superhero pants and get ready to bang that gong...
Get a superhero outfit
Top priority. Look the damn part. There’s a reason you always PR in new nano’s. The right outfit can make you invincible and ready to take on the world. A neon lulu tank will not get this job done. Think head to toe. Cape, mask, eye wear, socks, pants, logo...the whole nine yards. Go big or go home.
Give your superhero a name
Hint at your superpowers and definitely your all round awesomeness, but most importantly it has to be bad-ass ‘Tinkerbell’ for instance, will never PR. Period.
Choose your superpower
Consider your goals and what specific superpower you’ll need to reach them. Maybe it’s a generic physical power like super strength, speed, stamina or maybe it’s something a bit more niche like flying (useful for muscle ups and potentially wall balls), body contortion (move over K-Star), exceptional leaping (think burpee broad jumps and box jump overs) or ninja elbows (power cleans, front squats, thrusters). Be sure to pick something transferable and scalable so as not to limit your powers to one or two particular wods.
Begin Superhero Training
Start with some supermans and some wall climbs just to get a feel for things. Consider parts of your body need focus. Be mindful of where lycra will cling and what skills you need to maximize the usefulness of your powers. Oh, and squat more. (What?! You think superheroes don’t squat?)
Think up a good back story
You’re gonna need a good story to back up all these PR’s. Get creative. Include a vendetta, an enemy or two, a sidekick, maybe even a love interest. (If these people are based on your fellow classmates, be sure to conceal names. This is a game. Superheroes got no time for real life vendettas.)
Build some character
Superheroes need swagger. Think about posture, expression and a snappy catchphrase. Don’t be cocky or obnoxious with it. Less is more. (Everybody checks their ego at the door. Even superheroes.)
Prepare for the big reveal
Game day should start with a breakfast of champions. Bacon, eggs and a side of bacon. Practice your superhero character in private first for the most polished results. Get into the superhero mindset. Be confident. Walk tall and get ready to unleash your very own inner superhero.
It might feel strange at first, but keep at it.
You might just discover that you are not pretending at all.
You are, in fact, your own superhero.
