What inspired you to become a CrossFit coach?
My years of being a class instructor in the globo gyms sent me on a mission to create a program I felt was different, effective, inspiring and addictive, then I discovered CrossFit and realized all the work had already been done.
What has been your best coaching experience so far?
My best coaching experience is when one of my community overcomes a fear or achieves a new fitness goal.
Tell us about the community at CrossFit Leicester…
I feel very proud of my community in Leicester, they are an amazing group of people, that support each other and have helped out in so many ways to create the box we have today.
The box opened on May 1st 2012 in 818 sq ft, in the bowels of a print company warehouse, we had leaks in the roof and had to walk over pallets to avoid getting our feet wet. When we finally moved 4 months later I was amazed at the help we had from the members, everyone pitched in from loading equipment into removal vans to painting the new box. The sense of community was great right from the start.
We have 3 great coaches, 2 assistant coaches and my wife Jennifer whom without CrossFit Leicester would not be what it is today.
Will you and/or your athletes be competing in the Open this year?
Yes, we have about 4 or 5 Athletes competing in this years’ Open, although I won’t be entering myself.
What are the common signs of over training and how do you handle this with your athletes?
a) Frequency the athlete attends the box, together with the training they do outside the box;
b) Athletes physical appearance and mental state i.e. if they are looking tired and run down;
c) If performances are not improving or of they are getting worse in their performance.
If I thought this was an issue with one of my athletes, I would first talk to the other coaches to see if they have noticed any changes in the athlete, then I would take them to one side and talk to them and express my concerns and give them advice on how to deal with it.
What’s the most common mistake you see among new athletes at CrossFit Leicester?
The most common mistake I see new athletes make is they sacrifice technique for speed and get too hung up with the time on the board, how they fare against others and get wrapped up the competition - I emphasize technique first.
If you could give someone new to CrossFit Leicester just one piece of advice, what would it be?
Focus on good technique before speed.
Would you share with us a tip that we might find useful to use in our training?
Set goals, be patient, be consistent and work on your weaknesses.
Do you have any success stories among your athletes you’d like to share?
This may not sound like a big deal*, one that springs to mind is seeing a member cry as she stood frozen not able to jump onto a 20” box , only to have her run up to me days later having achieved it.
*Editors note: overcoming any fear is a big deal – atta girl!!
If you could bring together any 10 people in the world for a WOD who would they be?
I would pick a top Athletes from the sport fields of : 1. American football; 2. Boxing; 3. MMA; 4. Weightlifting; 5. 100m Sprinter; 6. CrossFit; 7. Rugby; 8. Soccer; 9. 100m Freestyle Swimming, and 10.Heptathlon.
Thanks for sharing Andy. Best of luck with the growing community at CrossFit Leicester!
